FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Hospitality to Strangers August 28 & 29, 2010 5:00 & 8:15
AS WE GATHER
In an age when casual is in, we often forget that our place at God's table is no casual matter. Before we presume anything, we need to be reminded that to sit at God's table came at His invitation and not our desire and that the place where we sit was earned for us by Jesus' suffering and death. Humility is a mark of true faith---that we cast aside all thoughts of our own worthiness in order to stand on the merits of Christ alone. He gives us a seat at God's table---here today in the Holy Communion and in eternity at the marriage supper of the Lamb that has no end.
+ PREPARATION +
HYMN “God Himself Is Present” LSB 907]
INVOCATION
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

(A time for silent reflection)
Pastor: Mighty God and everlasting Father,
People: we come to You as disobedient children who have forsaken Your ways. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by the things we have done wrong, and the good we have not done. There is no health in us and we cannot repair our sinful natures and lives. But we are sorry for all these and all our sins and ask You to forgive us in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son. Forgive us and grant us the aid of Your Holy Spirit that we may amend our sinful lives and live to the praise of Your glory.
Pastor: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon you and has forgiven you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Pastor: May He who began this good work within you bring it to completion on the day of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:16, alt.
People: Amen.
INTROIT Psalm 75:1-2, 6, 9, antiphon Psalm 75:7
Pastor: It is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
People: We give thanks to You, O God; we give thanks, for Your name is near.
We recount Your wondrous deeds.
Pastor: At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity.
People: For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
Pastor: But I will declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
It is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Let us pray.
(Silence for reflection)
Pastor: O Lord of grace and mercy,
People: teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow the example of Your Son in true humility, that we may withstand the temptations of the devil and with pure hearts and minds avoid ungodly pride; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. APOSTLES’ CREED LSB 159
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
CHILDREN’S TIME “The Wise Man Built His House Upon The Rock”
The wise man built his house upon the rock, The wise man built his house upon the rock,
The wise man built his house upon the rock, And the rains came tumbling down!
The rains came down and the floods came up, The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up, And the house on the rock stood firm.
The foolish man built his house upon the sand, The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand, And the rains came tumbling down!
The rains came down and the floods came up, The rains came down and the floods came up,
The rains came down and the floods came up, And the house on the sand went SPLAT!
So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, And the blessings will come tumbling down.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Pastor: With humble hearts made bold by Your invitation to pray and Your promise to hear and answer, we come to You today with the prayers and petitions of our heart.
(Silence for personal reflection)
Pastor: Keep us from the pride that presumes and therefore diminishes the magnitude of Your grace, O Lord, that with the true humility of faith we may rejoice in what You have done for us, desire and plan to humbly and boldly share the fruit of Your salvation with the 40% in our community who are lost, and live in this grace and favor all the days of our lives. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Sustain Your Church through the strife and struggles of this day, that she may have faithful pastors to proclaim Your Gospel, faithful leaders to encourage her in mission, and faithful servants to do Your work. Bless our own congregation and the work of Your kingdom with new Americans in this place. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Guide those in government who lead us in this country, and the leaders of all the nations, that everywhere, people may live in justice and peace. Bless the members of the armed forces of our nation who work for peace throughout the world. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Open our hearts in mercy to the poor and needy. Help us to be voices for those who cannot speak, especially in protection of the unborn. Teach us generosity that we may share our abundance with those who have nothing. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Strengthen our lives of faith through the faithful teaching of Your Word to young and old. Bless the catechumens and those preparing for full time church work. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Grant us Your Holy Spirit, that we may not think more highly of ourselves than we ought. Extend this humility of faith to our reception of the Lord's gifts in the bread which is His body and the cup of His blood and to our unity of faith at His table. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Give Your grace to the sick and the suffering, those struggling with mental illness, the grieving, and to the dying. May all who cry out to You know the fullness of Your healing, comfort, and presence according to Your gracious will. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Accept the worship of our hearts today and the gifts we bring. May these tithes and offerings that flow from Your generosity to us equip Your Church with the resources to do Your bidding. Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and grant our supplication.
Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

PROPER PREFACE
SANCTUS LSB 161
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow’r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Pastor: O Lord, You are worthy of all praise and glory, now and forever. All things were made by You and all things still preserved by Your grace. When You made us for Yourself, we rejected Your purpose and sought our own way, the way of sin and death. In Your great mercy You did not condemn us but sought us out with mercy to forgive us. You spoke this promise through the prophets until Your own Son became incarnate by the virgin and the Holy Spirit. He wore our own flesh and blood and lived among us to display Your glory. He bore the burden of our sin on the cross and He rose again to open for us the door to everlasting life. To bestow upon us the gifts of His grace, He established this meal of His body and blood, for us and our salvation.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
Pastor: As often as you eat of this bread and drink of this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
Pastor: Lord Jesus, come and take us to dwell with You in everlasting light and life. Until that day when You come to fulfill all things, keep us in faith by Your Holy Spirit, that we may be found faithful on the day of Your appearing.
People: Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.
Pastor: We rejoice, O Lord, in all that You have done as our Savior and Redeemer and for the promise of Your coming again that we may be with You in the eternal banquet feast of heaven. Grant us zeal for Your house on earth and zeal for the work of sharing the Gospel with all people. Strip away from us all pride that we may glory only in You and in what You have accomplished for our salvation.
People: Through Him, with Him, in Him, all honor and glory are Yours, almighty Father, both now and forevermore.
LORD'S PRAYER LSB 162
Pastor: Lord, lead us into Your Kingdom and teach us to pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
THE PEACE
Pastor: The peace of the + Lord be with you all.
People: Amen.
